this is where i went to school. it's pretty. it was never bombed. lots of german tourists come here. it definitely satisfies that cobblestone lust that americans get when they come to europe.

we stayed at the hotel right next to the town's castle. while the rooms were disappointingly modern and nice, the hotel did have a staircase that was from the 1300s. the castle is high up on the hill and you can see just about everything from here. the region is hilly and it's not far from the black forest, so the view is amazing.

the town square is cobblestone and filled with cafes. this is where i stood in october of 1990 for Reunification day. some of the restaurants threw their old "divided germany" dishes out the window at the stroke of midinght to celebrate the reunification. and in the usual tuebingen tradition, there were protests and counterprotests. some east german flags were burned. we luckily caught the weekly farmers marked while we were there.

kelly got to eat some german spaghettieis. they take vanilla ice cream and run it through a pasta extruder to make it look like spaghetti. then they cover it with strawberry sauce and coconut. yum.

another german delicacy: ketchup and mayonnaise mixed together in the same tube. <insert homer simpson sound>
